Dear Charlottesville City Schools families and staff,
Our schools are strong because our community is strong. This evening, our School Board is hosting families, staff, and students for the first-ever "Budget Bistro," a communal meal to discuss school dollars and share ideas on how the division should allot resources. About 200 members of our community have RSVP’d to learn about CCS programs, talk with student ambassadors, and share feedback with the School Board, all while breaking bread together.

With the help of a big student section and a loud CHS Sideline Cheer squad, the Charlottesville High School football team earned a 14-9 victory over Rocktown this past Friday in its first home game of the season. Gibson Duolo scored two touchdowns to lead CHS. The Black Knights are now 2-1 on the season and will host Jefferson District opponent Albemarle this Friday (September 25) for the Homecoming Game. This fall the City of Charlottesville will vote on a 1% local sales tax to fund school construction.
- A YES vote could mean an estimated $12 million in annual revenue exclusively for school capital projects.
- A NO vote would mean capital projects must be funded through existing revenue sources or delayed until alternative funding is secured.
Possible projects that the tax could support:
- Equipping Jackson-Via Elementary with a cafeteria and kitchen
- Equipping Greenbrier with a cafeteria and secure front entrance vestibule
- Giving CHS classrooms their first upgrade since 1974
The tax could not apply to groceries, essential personal hygiene products, and prescription medications. If passed, it could go into effect sometime in 2027 and remain in place until June 30, 2046.

What is your favorite part about your job?: I really enjoy the kiddos. I just love seeing them all grow and flourish. I can see the appreciation as well as feel the appreciation. It puts a smile on my face and makes it all worth coming to work. I love helping others. This is truly my calling.

What do you enjoy doing outside of school?: Spending time with my mom, kids, and grandkids. Shopping, dinner, traveling, movies, getting my hair done and not having to rush to work.

On September 16, the Charlottesville High School athletics department hosted a home cross-country meet at McIntire Park for the first time in school history. The Black Knights hosted Jefferson District opponents Louisa County, Fluvanna County, and Western Albemarle for the four-team meet. CHS runners Graham Goodale and Juliana Pierce earned individual victories in their respective races. Check out the event coverage from The Daily Progress and NBC29.

This school year, all of the City’s preschool students are learning together under one roof at the new Charlottesville Early Learning Center. Prior to this year, preschool students were taught at their neighborhood elementary schools.
“Everything is just developmentally appropriate,” CELC preschool teacher Michel Ann Sizemore said. “Kids aren’t having to go up steps that are way too big for them. They’re not having to access materials that are for kids that are older than them.” Watch the NBC29 story

The Charlottesville High School Orchestra and Bands earned 19 seats at the South Central Senior Regional Orchestra auditions. CHS had the largest single-school representation overall and will make up nearly 20 percent of this regional honors ensemble. The Senior Regional Orchestra event will take place November 13-14 at Harrisonburg High School.

Juniors and seniors from Lugo-McGinness Academy participated in workshops and activities designed to strengthen their physical, mental, and financial well-being during the second annual Revive and Thrive, which was hosted by the Jefferson School Foundation. Watch the NBC29 story

If your child is approaching a school transition (e.g. kindergarten, 6th grade, or 9th grade), join us for a tour of your child’s future school! Each school is offering prospective/future families guided tours throughout the year.

Free online tutoring is available for CCS students in Grades 3-8 in English/Language Arts and/or Math. The tutors are licensed teachers, and are available after school, in the evening, and on weekends. You schedule what works for your family. Sessions can be either 30 minutes or an hour.
Tutoring is available for the 26-27 school year or until available sessions are filled. Students can log onto their Clever account through a personal computing device and access K12 Tutoring by following these directions.

The Charlottesville City Schools Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Team is currently hosting a snack drive for our CCS students! Anyone wanting to purchase snacks can do so using this wishlist. You can also drop off snacks at the Division Annex (1400 Melbourne Road), or at any school of your choice. The snack drive runs until Friday, October 2. |
Charlottesville City Schools is seeking family members and staff to join the Calendar Committee, which advises on the development of the academic calendar for future years.
