Academics Hub

Academics

At Charlottesville City Schools, learning is dynamic, hands-on, and built for every learner. Our academic program balances strong core instruction with creative enrichment and innovative experiences. From foundational literacy and math to outdoor science labs and collaborative iSTEM projects, students are empowered to think deeply, ask questions, and express themselves. Our curriculum is designed not just to meet standards—but to ignite curiosity, celebrate diversity, and build confident, capable learners ready for whatever comes next.

Core Curriculum

We view elementary education as a partnership between the school and the family. Our Family-Facing Curriculum Guide provides a detailed roadmap of your child’s educational journey, including resources for you to support their learning at home.

Review Family-Facing Curriculum Guides

  • English/Language Arts
Students build strong literacy skills through reading, writing, and communication and explore both literary and informational texts.
  • Math
Students build skills and confidence with numbers, data, shapes, patterns, and more. Teachers regularly incorporate hands-on lessons to teach everything from fractions to probability.
  • Social Studies
Students learn about their local community, Virginia, the United States, and the world through a variety of perspectives in history, geography, civics, and economics.
  • Science
Students build on their natural curiosity through hands-on, inquiry-based learning as they study everything from plants to planets, physics, and the weather.

Specials & Enrichment

  • Students build a foundation for musical literacy, and strengthen their creativity, collaboration and communication skills through singing, playing instruments, listening, and moving.

  • Students explore a wide variety of media and materials as they develop fine motor skills, creative thinking, and an understanding of cultural and historical influences.

  • Students engage in cross-curricular activities that familiarize them with coding, engineering, and innovative thinking, preparing them for more advanced opportunities in our middle-school Innovation Hub. Projects include students designing their own scent, investigating the melting points of different candies, creating models of the ocean floor, and learning computer coding skills for all kinds of fascinating applications.

  • Students move and play indoors and outdoors, developing fundamental skills as they engage in games, sports, dances, and gymnastics. They also learn the basics of anatomy, nutrition, and safety.

  • Students learn how to use the many resources available in their school library, from checking out books to doing research in computer databases. They also learn the basics of digital literacy, digital citizenship, and internet safety.
